Port of Paranaguá — FCL export

FCL Export from the Port of Paranaguá

Paranaguá is the container gateway for Paraná and part of Santa Catarina, with TCP as its container terminal. Sync Port works from Curitiba, roughly 90 km from the port, so a terminal question, a supplier visit or a document problem is a drive rather than a phone tree.

Cargo profile

What we handle from this port

Paranaguá is one of Brazil's main agricultural export ports, and the containerised side of it reflects that. The cargo we see most often comes from the Paraná and Santa Catarina production base.

  • Frozen poultry and pork as reefer FCL, from the Paraná and Santa Catarina processing plants
  • Sawn lumber, plywood, wood panels and finished wood products
  • Containerised agribusiness cargo: soybean meal, bagged and big-bag products alongside the bulk corridor
  • Sugar, coffee and processed food
  • Machinery, auto parts and industrial goods from the Curitiba, São José dos Pinhais and Ponta Grossa belt
  • Paper, packaging and pulp-derived products
Process

How the booking works with Sync Port

1. Rate validation

We check the quote against the real shipment: commodity, HS code, weight per container, equipment type, Incoterm and which local charges sit on each side. For reefer cargo, temperature and ventilation settings are part of the scope, not a detail added later.

2. Booking

We place the booking with the carrier that fits the sailing window, confirm terminal, equipment and — for reefer — plug allocation, and return the confirmation with the deadlines highlighted.

3. Deadlines and cut-off

Documentation cut-off, VGM cut-off and gate-in cut-off are tracked separately. Reefer gate-in windows are usually tighter than dry ones, and they are the ones that most often catch a first-time shipper.

4. Documentation

Invoice, packing list, draft bill of lading and VGM are checked for consistency, together with the certificates the product requires: phytosanitary, ISPM 15 treated packaging, health certificate or halal certification, depending on cargo and destination.

5. Follow-up

From gate-in to sailing confirmation and B/L release, updates are sent with the next action named — and when something has to be checked at the terminal, it is checked from Curitiba, not remotely.

Reefer plugs and reefer cut-off

Reefer FCL has its own cut-off and its own plug allocation. Temperature, ventilation and pre-trip requirements are confirmed at booking, and the reefer gate-in window is normally shorter than the dry cargo window.

Harvest season and road access

Paranaguá is one of the country's main grain export ports. During peak harvest movement, road queues on the access corridor and terminal congestion change the realistic gate-in time, so cargo-ready dates are planned against that and not against a best case.

Free time and storage

Free time for empty pick-up and storage comes from the carrier and the contract, not from the port. We confirm what the booking grants for the specific shipment.

Local presence

Sync Port's office is in Curitiba, about 90 km from the terminal on the BR-277 corridor. Supplier meetings, terminal questions and document fixes are handled in person when that is faster.

Transshipment

Paranaguá has solid coverage on the main long-haul services, but not every lane calls direct. Where the routing relays, we name the hub and the connection risk in the quote instead of quoting a single door-to-door number.

Phytosanitary and packaging rules

Wood products, wooden packaging and several agricultural cargoes need phytosanitary certificates, fumigation or ISPM 15 treated pallets. These are scheduled before the cut-off, not on the day of gate-in.

Destinations

Typical destinations and considerations

Service patterns change with carrier alliances and seasons, so this table stays qualitative on purpose. Transit time and routing are confirmed on the quote, for the sailing you are actually booking.

DestinationWhat usually drives the decisionTransit time
AsiaThe main destination block for frozen protein from the region; plug capacity and equipment availability drive the booking.Confirm current transit on quote
Middle EastStrong flow for poultry, where halal certification and plant approval are destination requirements, not carrier requirements.Confirm current transit on quote
Northern EuropeRegular services for protein, wood products and containerised agricultural cargo.Confirm current transit on quote

FAQ

Questions we get about this port

Which terminal handles container exports in Paranaguá?

TCP, the Terminal de Contêineres de Paranaguá, is the container terminal. The port also operates bulk, liquid and general cargo terminals, but FCL bookings run through TCP, and the booking confirmation states the gate rules that apply.

Is Paranaguá better than Santos for an exporter in Paraná?

Often yes on inland cost and truck time, but the deciding factor is service coverage for your destination. We compare the Paranaguá option against Santos and, when it makes sense, against Itajaí, Navegantes and Itapoá before booking.

Do you handle reefer FCL from Paranaguá?

Yes. Frozen poultry and pork are among the main flows through the terminal. Reefer bookings need temperature, ventilation, plug allocation and a tighter gate-in window confirmed up front.

How close is Sync Port to the port?

Our office is in Curitiba, roughly 90 km from the terminal. That is close enough for supplier visits and terminal follow-up to happen the same day when a shipment needs it.

What documents does a first-time exporter need?

In practice: commercial invoice, packing list, the export declaration filed by the customs broker, bill of lading instructions and the VGM. On top of that come the product certificates — phytosanitary for wood and plant products, health certificate and halal for animal protein, and certificate of origin where the destination asks for it.

Exporting FCL through Paranaguá?

Send origin, destination, commodity, container type and quantity, cargo ready date and Incoterm. If the cargo is reefer, add the temperature setting. We come back with a scoped FCL quote.
